3 Keys to Hearing God

If your mom or dad called you, would you recognize their voice even without caller ID? Of course you would—when you're in a close relationship with someone, their voice is unmistakable. It’s the same when it comes to God. Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” The closer we are to Him, the clearer His voice becomes in our lives.

But how do we cultivate that kind of closeness with God? Here are three practical ways to help you hear His voice more clearly:

1. Close the Distance
Just like with any relationship, closeness with God requires time, effort, and openness. When our spiritual lives are inconsistent—skipping church, neglecting prayer, or staying away from His Word—we create gaps in our relationship. James 4:8 reminds us, “Come near to God, and He will come near to you.”

It’s also important to be honest and vulnerable with God. Unconfessed sin or holding back parts of our hearts creates separation. But when we approach Him with humility and transparency, we open the door for deeper connection. If you want to hear His whisper, lean in. Close the distance, and you’ll discover how near He’s always been.

2. Surround Yourself with the Right Voices
At NorthRock, we believe in the power of community. As Pastor Jonathan says, “Show me who your friends are, and I’ll show you your future.” If you want to grow in hearing God’s voice, spend time with people who are already walking closely with Him.

A great way to find these relationships is through joining a small group. Proverbs 12:26 says, “The righteous choose their friends carefully.” The right circle will inspire your faith, pray with you, encourage you, and help you stay grounded in your walk with Jesus.

3. See God in the Everyday
Sometimes, we get caught up looking for big, dramatic signs from God. But true relationship isn’t built on fireworks; it’s found in the everyday. If we base our faith on God performing miracles to prove He’s near, we set ourselves up for disappointment. Jesus Himself said in John 20:29, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Instead of chasing signs and wonders, seek Him in the ordinary moments—quiet times of prayer, a word from Scripture, or a conversation with a friend. Miracles are amazing, but they’re not the foundation of our faith. Real connection with God happens in the small, consistent moments where His presence becomes undeniable.
